Vianden Castle is a medieval fortress in the same canton Vianden Vianden in Luxembourg.
origin of the entire system was a Roman guard system from the late fifth Century. Of greater importance, as well as numerous enhancements experienced the imposing castle Hohenstaufen and most powerful remaining fortifications of Luxembourg, which is already mentioned in the Nibelungenlied, the 11th Century. The occasion was the removal of the Lords of Vianden from the Eifel to this place. The counts of Vianden were to the 15th Century, the most powerful men between the Rhine, Moselle and Meuse.
From 1417 to the French Revolution the castle was held by the House of Orange-Nassau. The castle was confiscated during the French Revolution, but returned in 1815 to William I, Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Wenzeslas Coster, der damalige Bürgermeister der Stadt, erwarb die Burg 1820 bei einer Versteigerung (Gleichzeitig wurden auch die Burgen Burscheid und Esch-Sauer versteigert). Er setzte die verkäuflichen Materialien der Burg wie zum Beispiel Kupferverdachung, Bleiverglasung, Holztäfelung und Eisenbeschläge schnell ab, worauf die Burg zusehends verfiel. 1890 kam die Burg mit Großherzog Adolf in die Hände des älteren Hauses der Nassauer und blieb bis 1977, als sie verstaatlicht wurde, im Besitz der Großherzöge. Seither ist sie fast vollständig restauriert worden.
